The Foundation’s first major initiative was to campaign globally for the protection of the lands of the Kayapo Indians in Brazilian Amazonia. This resulted in 1993 in the legal recognition and demarcation of an area of more than 17,000 square miles as the Menkragnoti Indigenous Area.

"Some Kinda Legacy"

We would like to thank those of you who joined us for our 15th benefit concert: "Some Kinda Legacy".

Your support is instrumental in successfully achieving many of the objectives set forth in our programs, including the diversification of our work and the extension of our support to indigenous peoples in Asia, Africa and the Americas.

But despite the work that we and others have undertaken, loss of rainforests and the violations of human rights of indigenous people and forest dwellers continue, just as they did in the late eighties.

Today, indigenous people are confronting immense challenges, such as climate change, the food crisis, the contamination of their water sources, all interrelated issues which demand global action from all those concerned if we want to stop the environmentally destructive path we are on.

This is why today your support is even more important. We need to save the lives of so many indigenous children who suffer from diseases due to lack of clean and safe water, we need to support the actions of local indigenous groups against government policies, which harm their environment and destroy their habitat.

Thank you for your support and taking part of this effort that is making a difference.

Also, the Empire State Building will glow green in tribute on the evening of the benefit.
